RESOLUTION N0.93- 3
A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE PROPOSAL TO EXTEND
AMTRAK PASSENGER SERVICE THROUGH ROANOKE, VIItGINIA
WHEREAS, the National Rrailroad Passenger Corporation ("Amtrak") has
recently completed an internal study of proposed new rail routes, including a new line
from New York to Atlanta by way of Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, the proposed new route would connect major northeast cities with
Atlanta through the western Virginia cities of Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Roanoke,
as well as the eastern Tennessee cities of Knowxille and Chattanooga.
WHEREAS, because of declining air and bus service to many of these cities and
the rural areas surrounding such cities, the Amtrak route would provide badly needed
transporation access and act as a catalyst to development of local economies; and
WHEREAS, citizens of the Town of Pulaski must now commute more than two
hours to reach an Amtrak station, making rail travel unfeasible for the vast majority of
• the Town of Pulaski citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of
Pulaski, Virginia, sitting in regular session on Apri16, 1993, that:
