HomeMy WebLinkAbout94-30RESOLUTION - 94-30 A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT NORFOLK SOUTHERN RECONSIDER RETIRING THE N&W 611 STEAM LOCOMOTIVE WHEREAS, the N&W 611 Steam Locomotive is a sleek, bullet-nosed, maroon and black passenger locomotive; and WHEREAS, to the delight of many, the late W. Graham Clayton, Jr., then a Southem vice president and later president of Amtrack, launched a program in 1964 to reactivate some old locomotives, including the 611, and WHEREAS, the 611 carried hundreds of rail fans, schoolchildren and others who wanted to experience again the days when smoke-belching steam locomotives hauled the nation's passengers and commerce, and WHEREAS, the 611 appeared in the Town of Pulaski on Depot Day, 1994, announcing itself with the long, mournful wail of its whistle, spreading nostalgia throughout the Town, and thrilling parents and children alike. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that theTown Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, hereby respectfully requests that Norfolk Southern reconsider its decision to retire the N&W 611 Steam Locomotive. • This resolution is effective upon adoption and is adopted by recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, sitting in regular session, on this 15th day of November, 1994 as follows: John A.
