HONORING CONWAY HOWARD SMITH
WHEREAS, Conway Howard Smith, a citizen of Pulaski and well-known author, has announced
that he is moving to St. Louis, Missouri to be near his daughter; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith who grew up in Pulaski, along with a sister, worked in his father's
printing company, before serving in the Navy in Okinawa in World War II; and,
WHEREAS, upon returning from World War II, Mr. Smith operated the printing company until
he retired; and,
WHEREAS, after retiring, Mr. Smith researched thousands of pages of letters, records, and
documents, and talked to hundreds of citizens, before authoring two books: Colonial Days in the
Land That Became Pulaski County, and The Land That Is Pulaski County and,
WHEREAS, the books contain the history of Pulaski County from colonial times to the County's
Centennial year, 1939; and,
WHEREAS, in 1981, Mr. Smith was awarded the Southwest Times Civic Honors Award, at the
30th annual Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce banquet; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith is currently working on an unnamed anecdotal book of Martin's Tank;
• and,
WHEREAS, IN CONSIDERATION of his many years of distinguished service to the citizens of
Pulaski, the Pulaski Town Council deems it appropriate and fitting to honor Conway Howard
Smith.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia,
sitting in regular session on March 7, 1995, that the Town Council hereby recognizes the
significant contributions of Conway H. Smith in preserving the history of our area and expresses
its appreciation and thanks on behalf of all the citizens of the Town of Pulaski
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is adopted by unanimous vote of the Town Council
of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, on this 7th day of March, 1995 as follows:
