HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-18• Ordinance 2000-18 Providing For Gross Receipts Tax on Telephone and Telegraph, and Heat and Light and Power Companies, and Suppliers, and Gas Utilities and Suppliers and Pipeline Distribution Companies • ADOPTED: December 5, 2000 EFFECTIVE: January 1, 2001 • • ORDINANCE 2000 - 18 ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR GROSS RECEIPTS TAX ON TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH, AND HEAT, LIGHT AND POWER COMPANIES, SUPPLIERS, GAS UTII.ITIES AND SUPPLIERS AND PIPELINE DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES • • WHEREAS, the Town Council sitting in regular session has given proper and due consideration to the option extended to the Town pursuant to Section 58.1-3731 of the 1950 Code of Virginia, as amended to impose a gross receipts tax on certain public service corporations; and WHEREAS, the Town Council has following a public hearing as required by law determined that a gross receipts tax pursuant to Section 58.1-3731 as aforesaid is consistent with the best interests of the citizens of the Town of Pulaski; NOW THEREFORE, be it hereby ordained by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, that all persons, firms, partnerships, corporations and other legal entities furnishing telephone and telegraph and heat, light, and power companies, suppliers, gas utilities and suppliers and pipeline distribution companies as defined in Section 58.1-3731 and statutes referenced therein of the 1950 Code of Virginia, as amended, for domestic, commercial and industrial consumption in the Town shall pay for the privilege an annual license tax equal to one-half of one percent of the gross receipts of such company accruing from sales to the ultimate consumer in the Town of Pulaski, Virginia. However, in the case of telephone companies, charges for long distance telephone calls shall not be included in gross receipts for purpose of license taxation. This ordinance shall be effective on January 1, 2001, by duly recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, on this 5th day of December, 2000. Lane RPenn - Ave Kenneth M.
