HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-25-55~~ Council Minutes Pulaski Va.~ January 25~ 1955 A special meetia[g of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski Virginia, was held on the 25th day of Januarys 1955, in the municipal building at 4 p.m. There were present: Mayor C. V. Jackson presiding Councilmen: 0. 0. Crowell W. F. Whitey C. T. Brookman, Marvin E. Lester W. A. Larson W. M. Farmer Absent: J. R. Martin and I. R. Carper Also present: Town Manager :Julian F. Hirst Clerk: Audrey E. Kingrea Town Attorney:Garnett S. Moore Visitors: Mrs. Mary Steger Mrs. H. W. Thaxton M rs ~. M. Painter Mrs. V. F. Southern Mrs. Mary Steger appeared before Council in connection with the garbage collection fees assessed against her apart- ments. She inquired as to the need of a garbage fees and the Mayor and others gave brief replies in which they stated the need for improved sanitation and health in the Town and additional revenues to meet these needs. Mrs. H. W. Thaxton next appeared before Council on the same subject. She stated that she would Like to have the assessment based on the number of containers and not on each apartment. Mrs. V. F. Southern also appeared before Council on the subject of garbage collection fees and stated that she would prefer having the fee based on number of containers rather than on each apartments pointing out that several of her apartments were empty a great deal of the time. Mrs. D. M. Painter next appeared and stated that she agreed with the other ladies and her position was the same as theirs. The Clerks then read letters from the following persons with complaints about the garbage collection fee: Harry A. Ringer J. C. Wallace Jr. Mrs. V. F. Southern Mary L. Jordan Mrs. John A. White made a motion recommending that the basis of charging apartments with a minimum fee of ~5¢ per apart~bent be discontinued and in lieu .thereof the assessment be base entirely on the commercial or schedule B rate. The Town Manager recommended that the motion be table until the next meeting. W. F. White then made a motion that the matter be giv~ln further study b efore the next meeting. W. A. Larson seconded the motion and it was unanimously carried. The meeting adjourned at 5:55 p.m. Approved yor Attest: G lerk
