HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-18-481 `'c~$~ Council Minutes Pulaski, Virginia, May 18, 1948 The Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia PRESENT MINUTES met in regular semi-monthly session in the Council Chamber of the Municipal Building at 7:30 P. M., May 18, 1948. There were present: Mayor A. T, Eskridge, presiding; Verna I,. Dalton, Clerk; A. W. Gatewood, Director of Public Works; L. S. Boothe, Chief of Police; Mrs. Lottie R. Runion, Treasurer, and Councilmen: C. V. Jackson, I.. R. Carper, G. C. Hall and W. F. White. Absent: T. F. Wirt, Howard R. Imboden, F. A. Seagle and W. D. Aust. The minutes of the regular monthly meeting held on May 4, 1948 were read and approved. VANCE LEESON The request of Vance Leeson of the Wilbert• VAULT DISPLAY & Monarch Vault Works of Pulaski, Virginia, and who was present, for permission to exhibit a vault on Memorial Day, May 30th, at Oakwood Cemetery was approved on motion of W. F. White, seconded by I. R. Carper and unanimously approved - provided same be done under the supervision of the Police Department and the Superintendent of Oakwood Cemetery. V.W.MO©DY V. W, Moody appeared in regard to erecting billboards at Calfee Park for advertising purposes and same being discussed, on motion of W. F. White~~: duly seconded and unanimously approved, the matter was referred to the Public Property Committee for consideration. CLINTON Clinton Collins of 603 Hickory Avenue, East COLLINS Pulaski, came before the Council, advising that large rocks in the road in above section were making same impassable and contributing to car damage. The•Director of Public Works advised that same was not in a bad condi- tion for a graveled street, but that said street would probably be further improved in the not-too-distant future. The Council took no action on the matter in consideration of the information presented. S~EgrS R. F. Snyder of Snyder~s Florists appeared and FLORISTS requested that some action be taken to relieve him of the necessity of depositing coins in the parking meters while Council Minutes Contd. Ha11, duly seconded and unanimously approved. E., fram~l, -H.IN.Huff to cost 2,500.00; To H. W. Huff Estate (by H. W. Huff, Jr..) ss Estate for Heating Oil Storage Tank, concrete and steel structure, o~ East side of Madison Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets , to '-Vordo cost X500.00; And to S'~tephen E. CHIEF OF POLICE TO ATTEND SCI~OOL TOWN-COUNTY RADIO STOP SI GNS 1ST ST. & VALLEY TO BE INCLUDID IN RESO. Pulaski, Virginia, M~ 18, 1948 On motion of W. F. 1l~hite, duly seconded and unanimously approved, the Council authorized that the Chief of Police and Police Officer C. G.Blankenship be sent to the police school to be held in Richmond beginning June 7 and lasting for a period of two weeks. In the matter of a contract between the County and Town regarding recent agreement for a joint radio pro- gram, the Chief of Police advised that the Town Attorney would prepare same upon direction of the Council, whereupon, on motion of I. R. Carper, duly seconded and unanimously passed, the Town Attorney was directed to prepare such a contract and the Mayor and Clerk were authorized to execute same upon its completion. Councilman Carper advised that the removal of stop signs on First Street at Valley Street some years ago had caused difficulty in traffic at said location, and recommended that same be replaced, whereupon on motion of W. F. White, seconded by I. R. Carper and unanimously approved, the Council authorized that stop signs be erected at said location. On motion o~f I. R. Carper, duly •seconded and unanimously approved, the Council authorized that the following traffic ^S top" signs be included in the resolution adopted at the regular monthly meeting of -the-Council held on February 6, 1947: First Street, S. W. & Valley Street - Stop signs to be erected on 1st Street & controlling both East & %est Bound Traffic. The Director of Public Works reported to the PUB.WKS. REPORTS Council as follows: -Sidewalk 1. Request for a sidewalk on South Jefferson S. Jefferson Avenue on West side between 1st and 2nd Streets had been received - the estimated cost to be 738.00 and construction to be • made on the usual basis - the Town paying fifty percent and fifty percent being borne by the abutting property owners. -approved On motion of C. V: Jackson, seconded by G.C. Hall and unanimously approved, the above request was granted as set forth. -S..i~~al~ 2. A petition had been presented from people whoF Hall Apts. owned property on alley West of Hall Apartments, t extending between 3rd and 4th Streets, requesting' that the alley be paved, and all ad3acent property' owners, with the exception of the Pure Oil Company", had signed the petition. -Approved On motion of G. C. Hall, seconded by I. R. Carper and unanimously approved, the Council auth~i prized that the alley be paved on the usual basis; of one-third of the cost being .borne by the Town _ and two-thirds of the cost being borne by the abutting property owners as soon asppracticable, ~' and directed that the Pure Oil Company be notified that they would be~billed with their proportion of the cost. -Calfee Park 4. Greerts (Greer) property on South Washington Avenue and Third Street had been completed. -Geo. Bouras if 6. .George Bouras requested permission to put in req. sidewalk sidewalk at his own expense at the Southwest inte~+- section of Randolph Avenue and Second Street, the sidewalk to be on the East side of his property, fronting Randolph Avenue. i ~ On motion of C. Hall, duly seconded. and unanimdlisly COUNCIL MEETING approved, the Council authorized the postphonement of the m~1et- ing due to be held on June 8 to June 10, due to .the 8th bei election day.
