There were present: A. T, Eskridge, -nresiding; Lot~tie R. Runs on, Clerk; A. V~. Gatewood, Director of Public V`dorks; Roby K. Sutherland, Attorney; ~. C. Pierce, Chief of rolice,; and Councilmen: J. K. Harrison, L. E. Vdhitesell, 0. P. Jordan, Jr., F. A. Seagle, T. L. J~-yes, G. C. Hall and A. ~~. Bushong. Absent: J. E. Bunts. The minutes of the regular meeting held on July 6, 1944 were read and approved. ~~ The regular bills and payrolls for the month of Duly were audited, approved and ordered paid. Said bills are given at the conclusion of these m~nutPS. A building permit, coming within the requirements of $ze ordnance, was granted to B. P. 0. Elks X1067 to enclose back entrance of store room occupied by J. V~allace, '~ material to be used cinder block, s~.~e 12' x 14~, to be used as storage room and office - estimated cost d~60i~.00 - location, on the north side of 2nd street 1~. ~~. betvreen Vdashington ands' Jefferson Avenues. An application was presented by VV. F. & J. H. White, trading as Virginia~0ak Flooring Com?~any, for permit ~o rebuild their flooring plant, located on the east side of Peirce Avenue, south of llora Highway, which was destroyed by fire on July 27, 1944, materials to be used as follows: machine building from cinder block, blaning mill from cinder, ~, block, dry kiln from the and brick, warehouses from frame and metal sides, composition roof. Estimated cost ~17.500.~0. On motion of T. L. James, seconded rv 0. P. Jordan, and unanimously passed, the permit was granted~sub~ect to governental approval. I~lr. V'J. F. 4u'hite appeared before the Council in connection with the application, and also stated that under ~he requirements of the insurance company, it would be necessary"i that his plant be supplied by an 8-inch water main. Pierce submitted the police report for the REPORT month of July, which. was read and ordered filed. On motion of J. K. Harrison, seconded by A. P~4. SIDEWALK Dr. A. Iui. Bushong, representing himself, M. B, First St.~~r,. , A.~.Bushon~-~1~c~Alecv and hrs. Frank Rhea, requested the installation of a and other. 5-foot sidewalk along their properties on the South side of First Street, S. W, between Lake and Cliff Streets, the property ovmers agreeing to assume one-half of the cost' of the construction. On motion of F. A. Seugle, seconded by T. L. James, and unanimously passed, the installation of• the sidewalk was authorized. HOUSING The mayor called to the attention of the Council RESOLU- TION the need for housing to take care of additional employees of the Radford Ordnance ti'~Torks, and. on motion of J. K. Harrison, seconded by A. hri. Bushong ~ $nd un~,nimously~ pa5sedr, the following resolution was adopted: WHEREAS, there is again a drastic need for housing' in our community; and VuHEttEAS, it beinh good business as well as our patriotic duty to aid, assist and encourage in every way we '' can in the housing of additional employees of the Radford Ordnance 4uorks, N04°d, THEREFORE, BE IT RE50LVED by the Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, that we appeal to our citizer~S to open their homes and hearts to these patriotic vaorkers coming here to make munitions so necessary to the prosecuti ~' and winning of this war. Pierce, chief of police, made a report on Report Post-~var post-war needs of ~e police department, stressing especially needs the need of an additional car, two-~°~ay radio system, tear gas and Thompson machine gun. ~n•concluding, `i~r. "'Pi-erc~ stated that the matter would be presented to the in-coming Council at its September meeting, for action. Ke-tiring Mayor Eskridge expressed his appreciation to Counilmen the retiring Councilmen for their services and coopera- tion, all of whom replied that it had been a pleasure to be a member of the body, ana privileged to serve the Town as Councilmen through the years. kDJOUttN- There being no further business, the Council :SENT adjourned at 9:15 P. ~.
