W. Calfee, presiding; Lottie R. Runion, clerk; A. W. Gatevrood, Director yublic Works, and Councllmen: A. T. Eskridge, T. J. Wallner, L. E. Whitesell, T. L. James, F. A. Seagle, G. C. Hall and J. E. Bunts. Absent: A. M. Bushong. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting held on August 13th and the organization meeting held on September 2nd, were read and approved. OATHS Councilmen J. E. Bunts and G. C. Hall were qualified by the Mayor, administering the required oath of office. VACANCIES. Miller, CPA, was employed to audit the treasurer's books for the past fiscal year. BILLS & A detailed statement of the regular bills and PAYROLLS payrolls for the month of August was audited, approved and on motion duly made, seconded and unanimously passed, ordered paid. Said bills are given at the conclusion of these minutes. BUILDING The following building permits, coming within the PERMITS requirements of the ordinance were granted: To Bert Akers for a one-story brick dwelling on the south side of Newbern Road to cost X3300.00; R. T. Long for a one-story brick dwelling on the north side of 12th St. N. W., to cost ~3300.00,(between Prospect and Randolph Avenues). T. F. Wirt for one-story frame dwelling on the west side of Henry Ave., between 5th and 6th streets, to cost X3,000.00; W. R. Bentley for one-story frame dwelling on the south side of Locust St., C ~. PERMIT On recommendation of-the Street Committee., the ~H M HUFFMAN - permission to install application of M. M. Huffman. for~two gasoline ~um~as on GAS Tanks the west side of Jefferson Ave., North, between 2nd and 3rd streets, was granted, with the provision that the tanks were to be removed one year from date of installation, (September 1st, .1940) and not to be replaced. ' NEHI On recommendation of-the Street Committee, the SIGN Nehi Bottling Company was granted permission to place a BIG LEAGUE EXHIBI- TION GAME LOT PULASKI St. ASPHALT PAVEMENT TOP sign at_t~ie`:entrance to town at the South corporate limits,w~!th tfie ~:u~tierptanding.: that the Mayor was to de5ighate the place.,.., On motion duly made, seconded and unanimously passed, the Pulaski Fire Department was granted permission to stage a big league exhibition baseball game here on April 9, 1941, for the benefit of the department. On motion duly made, seconded and unanimously passed, the finance committee was empowered to sell a lot owned by the Town, on Pulaski Street near Valley Street, the same having been acquired years ago for the purpose of operating a rock .quarry, and it appearing to the Council that the same could never be used for this purpose, nor would the town ever have any use for this property. On motion duly made, seconded and unanimously passed,:' ~'~ the Council authorized the laying of asphalt pavement top on 5th Street, Forth from Madison Ave. to Washington Ave., and on Washington Ave. from First St. So. to the corporate ~~ limits; also on 2nd Street North from Washington ~o ~dadison Ave., at an estimated cost of X9,145.00. The Mayor pas authorized to issue a warrant for the cost of these improvements, payable January 1, 191. 1y2 Council B~inutes Contd. Pulaski, Va., Sept. 5, 1940 STATE HIGKWAY On motion duly made, seconded and unanimously passed, FUNDS the following resolution requesting the State Highway. Commission for maintenance and reconstruction funds for. the year 1940-1941, was passed: RESOLU- BE IT RE50LVED by the Council of the Town of Pulaski, TION Virginia, that the State Highway Commission be and is hereby requested to allocate to the Town of Pulaski, maintenance funds for the maintenance of State Highways within the corporate limits of the Town of Pulaski for ~h~ years 1940-1941, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Highway Commission be requested to allocate to said Town for said years, recon- struetion funds, the same to be used for the widening out and improving Rsndolph Avenue in the Town of Pulaski, which forms a part of State Route X99. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the State Highway Commission.
