R pert Edens, presiding. Councilmen: Wm.A. House, Glen K. Aust, J. H. White, A. L. Graham Mason A. Vaughan Absent: W, D. Macgill, Jr., S. G. Frye, Raymond F. Ratcliff Also present: Town Manager: J. Schrader, Southwest Times reporter Joyce Gardner, WPW Radio Station WAIVER OF NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING We, the undersigned, duly elected members of the Council of the Town of Pulaski Virginia, hereby waive notice of a Special Meeting of said Council at 5000 P. M. on the 6th day of August, 1970, called by Mayor C. Robert Edens,. in the Municipal Offices in the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, for the purpose of adopting a Resolution opposing the suspension of air service at the New River Valley Airport by Piedmont Airlines. WITNESS our signatures this SPECIAL MEETING [l 1 Mayor Edens welcomed the members of the Press, and stated Council was especially pleased and honored to have the guest of Councilman House, 6th day of August, 1970. AIDPTED ii RE: SUS:;{ AIR ij SERVICE'.: BY PIE D: man White, and carried, the following resolution was adopted: _. _ . ~-.: RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Piedmont Aviation, Inc., has made application to the Civil Aeronautics Board for a Temporary Suspension of Service Permit, pending its hearing upon its application to delete Blacksburg, Pulaski, and Radford, Virginia, from Piedmont's Certificate for Route 87; and, WHEREAS, the Town of Pulaski, as a political subdivis which has contributed large sums of money toward the establis meat of the New River Valley .Airport Por and on behalf of its citizens and the citizens of the entire New River Valley, bel that if either of Piedmont's pending applications be granted the result would cause serious and irreparable damage to Pula and the entire area; and, t ;u WHEREAS, the population and economy of the New River `~ ~, n Valley has during the past decade responded to the 3oint platunn and efforts of the political subdivisions thereof, working together and in partnership with the State of Virginia and man, departments of the Federal Government, while sections of Virgi'i u and some of those particularly in the Appalachian Region west f the New River Valley have defined in population and have had many instances less industrial. growth; and, '.% WHEREAS, the availability of a commercial airline at N~w it River Valley Airport has been one of'the i~aportant factors ford the growth of this area as is witnessed by the fast that air freight and express at said Airport has continued to grow even ~r- ~~~ August 6, L970 G,. with certain limitations (imposed by Piedmont), with airport ~ ~. ~+ the airline strik®, 'and ~a limited ~ t repairs, and up., ading;, I f Y schedule of landings; and, WHEREAS, the granting of Piedmont's applioations would, create a serious impaot on all planning, efforts and development in the Valley and would create a great monetary loss to looalitie , I the State and Federal Government; that the loss to the Federal Government alone would be many times greater than any subsidies which they now or would in the future pay Piedmont, and as serious as any of these,, the impact would result in a complete ' reversal of the program achieved through the efforts of all Government in upgrading the economic level of this eras and es eeially in that portion within the Appalachian Region. E !a wil ing to spend additional money in 1969 to increase the strength; 1 oil he runways and to do whatever else was necessary to make the ` i ;i ai ort available for jet-landings, but were advised that it was '~ not necessary because jets were not available. Now, a year later ail one of Piedmont's main arguments for their application is the 1 fa that they cannot land with their jets. `;. !
