Grocer Company, relative to the east-west alley between ?•'ashington and ?~ladisbn .Avenues adjacent to the Coleman Furniture plant, had been rejected an~ asked Council to hold in abeyance its rec,uest to Coleman Furniture Co#~porati.on ATTY.ASK THAT to remove certain obstructions from sai_~ alley until formal petition REQ. OF COLEMAN FURN. TO REMOVE~ould be presented to Council at its regular me~ti.ng, September 17th, ~ at OBSTRUCTIONS IN ALLEY, BE which time the Coleman Furniture. Corporation would petition the Counc~.l to HELD IN ABEY- ANCE PENDING close said alley as wAll as certain other alleys and present its case'to PET. FUR CLOSING ALLEY Council. Mr. Gilmer further stated that he represented other propert~ owners adjacent to this alley, namely: J. L. Harr~_s, 'dm. P. Luttrell, H. ?^T. Huff, Jr. and the ?~?hiting Oil Company, all of whom have no objection to the closing of this alley. h?o action was taken by Counc~..l. n!~r. Phil Sadler appeared on behalf of Garnett Burgess whoEe operator's permit to operate a taxicab had been lifted by Chief of 1'ol.ice COUNCIL. Comer, as a result of Mr. Burgess having been rFCently arrested for UPHELD DEC. OF POLT~ driving while under the influence of intoxicants, and asked that Council CHIEF TN RE- VOKING G, restore said operator's license to Mr. F'urgess until such time as his BURGESS OPRS. LICENSE TO OPR. ' TAXICAB ~:~`~~0 ~... Council mins, tontd Sept.3, 1963, ~~ p. N!. license is revoked by the State; that P~1r. Burgess's case would come up on appeal during the September Term. of Circuit Court and it was important that Nir. Burgess be allowed to operate a cab in order that he have some method of making a living. On motion made by Councilman Aust, seconded by Councilman Nuckols, and carried unanimously, it was, RI?SOLVFD, that the decision of police Chief Comer in revoking Mr. Burgess' permit be upheld. Councilman Larson reported that a resident of CARSON Newbern Road had approached him Frith a rectuest that the, Town take ADVISED THAT some steps to control. the storm waters from the Grove Drive area from REQ. FOR CONTRuL OF washing across his property. 1`•1r, Larson was advised that before STORM WATERS CONTRuL ON he came on the Council this matter had been looked into by the NEWBERN RD, FR. GROVE DR. Street Committ-ce and it was the recommendation of the committee that CONSIDERED EARLIER nothing could be done because this was the natural drain because of the lay of the land in that area. No action was taken by Council, but it was agreed that Mr. Larson and Town Manager Noland would look at the situation again. Councilman Gallimore advised that the meeting of the special committee on the Governor's Youth Council was not held SPEC.COMM. on the 3rd of September as scheduled, but had been postponed until GOV"RS Y CiU rH COUNCIL TO the 10th at 1:30 p, M. and he hoped to have a report at the next meeting REPORT NEXT MEETING of Council. After a report from Town Manager Noland regarding the condition of the N?ar.y E. Gunter property at 130 1st Street, S. 1nL, and the MARY E.GUNTER lack of any response to the legal notice, Councilman Larson moved that PROPERTY TO BE DEMOLISHED the To*~,rn Manager proceed to demolish said residence in accordance with the terms of an ordinance which became effective June 2~, 1959, providing for the razing or repair of unsafe buildings. Town Manager Noland read to Council a letter from Mr. Martin Johnson of ~^1i1Cy & Z~lilson, Lynchburg, who had recently made a survey and study of the Loving Field Industrial nark with regards to establishing water and sewer services to the site, as well as developing the tract into several industrial sites. After a discussion of this matter by Council, on motion of Councilman FINANCE COMM. McCarthy, seconded by Councilman Flint, =end carried unanimously, TO STUD: REPORT OF WILE" & it was, R~'SOLVI+,D~ that the matter be turned over to the Finance WILSON ItF' : ' SURVEY OF Committee with a meeting to be set up ~a~th the full Council to meet LOVING F~'IELD IND. MAID It was then agreed to hold this meeting on Thursday morning, SCHEDULED September 5th, at 7:30 A. M. at the Nat~ona7. Guard ,4rmory. The matter of teenagers being out on the streets of Pulast~i late at night Bras discussed and Councilman Gallimcre moved that the ToUrn Manager be instructed to 1_ook into the matter and see that, the CURFEW ORD. TO BE MORF. curfew ordinance is more strictly enforced. This motion was seconded STRICTLS.' ENFORCEI) by Councilman Cummings, and carried.
