RESOLUTION 2011-03
RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EXTENSION OF RAIL PASSENGER
SERVICE TO THE NEW RIVER VALLEY REGION
WHEREAS, rail passenger travel is increasingly seen as a viable alternative to automotive
[ravel offering many positive aspects Including, but not limited to, reduced environmental
impact; eManced safety; reduced use of automobiles', and efficiency of operation', and,
WHEREAS, rail passenger service has proven successful in linking Washington, D.C. with
Richmond, Fredericksburg antl Lynchburg; antl
WHEREAS, the New River Valley has sufficient rail infrastructure to accommodate
passenger trains antl suRmient demand, tlue to its large stutlent population and location
relative to adjacent states, to support operation of rail passenger service; and,
WHEREAS, rail passenger service has the potential to best minimize transportation
disruptions to the citizens during times of increased energy costs and questionable
availability of energy supplies',
NOW THEREFORE, be it RESOLVED that the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski,
Virginia, sitling in regular session this 15~"day of March 2011 strongly recommentls that
the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation censitler extending Amtrak rail
passenger service to the New River Valley from Lynchburg;
Be it FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Town Council strongly recommentls that the
planning for the Trans-Dominion Express proceed forwartl.
This resolution is effective u~on atloption and is hereby atloptetl by the tluly recorded vote
of the Town Council this 15~ tlay of March 2011 as follows:
