Consolidation Concerns Regarding Potential Closure
Of Pulaski Middle School
BE it THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Pulaski Town Council respectfully requests that the
Pulaski County Board of Supervisors formally recognize the following concerns regarding the
potential closing of Pulaski Middle School and the potential negative impact to our county seat, the
Town of Pulaski, should the closure occur. Those concerns are:
Economic
o Pulaski Middle School currently enrolls approximately 450 students. Including faculty,
staff and parents, the number of people no longer commuting in/out of the Town of
Pulaski would likely number in the hundreds resulting in a significant loss for our town
businesses and ultimately town revenue.
o The Town of Pulaski is poised for an economic resurgence. One of our greatest
incentives to entice people to reside or start a business in our county seat is the
competitive tax rate of our county. A tax increase which removes our competitive
edge over neighboring counties would run the risk of making the Town of Pulaski one
of the most expensive towns in which to live and do business, potentially undermining
efforts to revitalize the town.
• Existing School Building
o The Town of Pulaski has for years struggled with repurposing numerous empty
buildings throughout the town and it has proven to be a difficult task. Pulaski Middle
School sits in a prominent location overlooking the town and, not unlike Calfee Park,
is a historic part of our town. To have this prominent building vacant in the heart of
our county seat, without a fully developed repurposing plan, would most certainly be
detrimental to our town, again, potentially undermining revitalization efforts.
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 7th day of January 2014 by
the duly recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski as follows:
Heather L. Steele - Aye H.M. Kidd - Absent
Gregory C. East - Aye Joseph K. Goodman - Aye
David L. Clark - Aye James A. Radcliffe - Aye
