Resolution Proclaiming the Week of April 3-9, 2016
as
Local Government Education Week
WHEREAS, local government has been an integral part of the Commonwealth of Virginia
since the creation of the eight original "shires" by a royal decree of
King Charles I in 1634; and,
WHEREAS, local governments throughout the Commonwealth provide valuable services
to the citizens of the communities they serve among which are law enforcement, fire and
rescue services, recreation, public education, and infrastructure operation and
maintenance; and
WHEREAS, over their long history, local governments in the Commonwealth have
developed new methods of service delivery and administration, most notably the creation
of the Council-Manager form of government by the City of Staunton on April 2, 1908, which
ushered in a new era of administering and managing localities nationwide; and, -
WHEREAS, in recognition of the work performed by local governments, the Virginia
General Assembly, on February 29, 2012, designated the first week in April as Local
Government Education Week in Virginia;
NOW, THEREFORE be it RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski,
Virginia sitting in regular session thisl5th day of March 2016, that April 3-9 is hereby
designated as Local Government Education Week;
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 15th day of March
2016 by the duly recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia as
follows:
