A Resolution Calling for the Expedient Repair and Reopening of
the Historic Pulaski Post Office
WHEREAS, a post office is an important center of community life and activity, giving its citizens a sense of
identity and continuity that is vital to maintaining the vigor and unity of the entire community; and,
WHEREAS,the Pulaski Post Office has served for one hundred years as an enduring focus of life within the
Town, serving generations of Town citizens as a mainstay of the social and economic life of our community;
and,
WHEREAS, effective July 20, 2017, the Pulaski Post Office was officially closed with little notice to the public
and for reasons that generally remain unknown and unexplained to the satisfaction and concern of the Town
and its citizens; and,
WHEREAS, during this closure, Town citizens and businesses must make a fourteen mile round trip to
Dublin to retrieve their mail, resulting in a great inconvenience to citizens and hindering the timely shipment
of important items for business and professional entities; and,
WHEREAS,this closure has resulted in a particular hardship for our elderly and disabled citizens who lack
transportation to Dublin and are dependent upon being able to walk to or otherwise have ready access to the
local post office to conduct their affairs; and,
WHEREAS, repairs or mitigation of unspecified problems at the Post Office still do not appear to have
commenced, fueling citizen anxiety that the Post Office will not be reopened;
NOW,THEREFORE be it RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia sitting in regular
session this 1st day of August 2017 that the Town Council in the strongest possible terms hereby calls for the
restoration of service at the Pulaski Post Office to be expedited as quickly as practically possible with the
goal of restoring postal service to our community with minimal additional delay;
FURTHER RESOLVED,that the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski opposes any attempt to close the
Pulaski Post Office and remove postal services from the Town without full public notice and a fully
transparent process and is willing to partner with the Postal Service to assist in moving the restoration of
local postal service forward;
FURTHER RESOLVED,that the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski does hereby request the assistance of
our Federal senators and representatives in the restoration of local postal services to the Town and its
citizens.
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 1St day of August 2017 by the duly
recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia as follows:
