HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-21Ordinance 2021-21 Ordinance Moving Local Elections to November WHEREAS, the Virginia General Assembly has approved legislation [S 1157j that all city and town elections held after January 1, 2022, shall be held at the time of the general election in November, with terms for those elected and qualifying to serve commencing on January 1St; and, WHEREAS, the legislation requires that any city or town currently providing for the election of its Mayor, governing body, or school board at a May election shall by ordinance provide for the transition to the November general election date; NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia sitting in regular session this 6th day of July 2021, that the elections for the Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, shall be held on the date of the November general election as required by state law. FURTHER BE IT ORDAINED, as set forth in state law, no term of a mayor or member of Council shall be shortened in implementing the transition to the November general election date. The Mayor and members of the Town Council elected at a May general election and whose terms are to expire as of June 30 shall continue in office until their successors have been elected at the November general election and have qualified to serve, with their term commencing January 1St This ordinance is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 6th day of July , 2021 by the duly recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia as follows: Lane R.
