HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-05• Pulaski • V I R G I N I A RESOLUTION 2000-5 INCREASED DRIVER SAFETY ALONG INTERSTATE 81 WHEREAS, according to VDOT, Virginia Interstate 81 is a vital economic and social lifeline for the communities of western Virginia, covering; 325 miles with 90 interchanges; serving 29 colleges; 48 historical districts; and uniting 60% of the state's population, and; WHEREAS, a common danger is posed to the citizens of western Virginia since, according to VDOT, traffic on I-81 has doubled in the last 10 years, ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 vehicles per day with trucks making up to 20 to 40 percent of the traffic mix, and; WHEREAS, each holiday season, traffic is especially heavy because of the number of families and students who travel Virginia I-81, and; WHEREAS, necessary future expansion and improvements to I-81 will cause increased hazard and disruption, and; • WHEREAS, the Town of Pulaski will unite with other communities along I-81from Bristol to Winchester in passing a resolution to encourage driver safety and awareness. NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, sitting in regular session on March 7, 2000 that the Town of Pulaski hereby joins with other municipalities along I-81 in a call for increased driver safety, responsibility and awareness throughout the year 2000. This resolution is effective upon adoption and is adopted by recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, on this 7~` day of March, 2000 as follows: James M.
