RESOLUTION - 93-17
WHEREAS, Philip M. Sadler, senior partner in the firm of Gilmer,
Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland, and Hutton, has announced his retirement
effective December 31, 1993; and,
WHEREAS, before becoming an attorney, Mr. Sadler was a high school
and business school teacher, and also worked briefly for the
Government Accounting Office; and,
WHEREAS, during World War IT, Mr. Sadler served in the Navy and was
commissioned as an officer in 1942, and among other commendations,
earned the Purple Heart for his role in the Battle of Okinawa,
subsequently retiring from the military with the rank of Lieutenant
Commander; and,
WHEREAS, following graduation from the University of Virginia School
of Law, Mr. Sadler began practicing law in 1947, a practice marked by
his willingness to serve people no matter their station in life or
ability to pay; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sadler, in addition to providing pro Bono services
hrough his private practice, offered his services to the Legal Aid
ociety of the New River Valley and to the Virginia Public Defender
Commission, and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sadler has been active in professional organizations,
serving as president of the Virginia State Bar from 1975 to 1976, and
as president of the Virginia Bar Foundation in 1978, and holding
other positions within the Virginia State Bar Council and Foundation,
and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sadler was the first attorney in Virginia to receive the
Virginia State Bar's "Tradition of Excellence" Award in 1987 and was
named a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 1990; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sadler has been president of the Pulaski County Jaycees
and the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, and has served as
Chairman of the Pulaski County School Board; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, Mr. Sadler has been recognized for his work on
behalf of charitable organizations including New River Community
Action, Habitat for Humanity, Pulaski Daily Bread, Share, the Pulaski
Free Clinic and other organizations; and,
WHEREAS, as a community leader and in his efforts on behalf of the
poor and disadvantaged, Mr. Sadler has exemplified the highest
~tandards of fairness and compassion and community service; and,
