RESOLUTION NO. 94-6
RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE ROUTING OF INTERSTATE 73 THROUGH
PULASKI COUNTY, VIItGINIA
WHEREAS, under the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation and Efficiency Act, the United
States Government identified a high priority need fora 900 mile road to link Detroit, Michigan
to Chazleston, South Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the proposed interstate highway would be identified as I-73; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Transportation has proposed several alternatives to
connect that section of I-731inking West Virginia to North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, it appears that the alternative calling for I-73 to follow the existing I-77 is
impracticable due to the lack of capacity in the tunnels at Big Walker Mountain and East River
• Mountain; and
WHEREAS, it appears that the proposed route to the East of Pulaski County along the Route
460!8 Corridor is impracticable as it would take travelers far outside their normal path of
travel; and
WHEREAS, it appears that the proposed route through Pulaski County along the Route 100
Comdor can be constructed with a minimum of expense and would provide an efficient and
direct route between West Virginia and North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the construction of I-73 through Pulaski County would increase the ability of
Pulaski County to serve new businesses and industry by providing direct access to other
portions of the country through the intersection of I-73 and I-81;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia,
sitting in regular session on February 1, 1994, that the Town Council of Pulaski does hereby
endorse and request the construction of Interstate 73 along the Route 100 Corridor through
Pulaski County, Virginia.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution should be forwarded to Governor George
Allen, Jr., the Virginia Department of Transportation, United States Congressman Frederick
Boucher, United States Senator Charles Robb, United States Senator John Warner, Senator
• Malfourd Trumbo, Senator Madison Marye and Delegate Thomas Baker, Jr.
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is adopted this first day of February, 1994 by
duly recorded vote of the Town Council as follows:
