HomeMy WebLinkAbout94-20• N0. 94-20 RESOLUTION HONORING GARY C. HANCOCK WHEREAS, Gary C. Hancock was appointed to Mayor of the Town of Pulaski on October 7, 1985 and was elected to the position in 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1992; WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Gary C. Hancock, the Town's downtown was named to the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register. In addition, the Pulaski Historic Residential District and South Historic Residential and Industrial District was also received those recognitions; and WHEREAS, Through his efforts, Pulaski became the first western Virginia community to become part of the Main Street Program, which has led to a rebirth downtown. As part of its $4 million bond issue in 1987, the Town completed major downtown renovations, including parking lots and sidewalk improvements and tree plantings; and WHEREAS, Gary C. Hancock was a key figure in the Town's acquisition and renovation of the Pulaski Train Station. On June 11, 1994, as estimated 10,000 people celebrated the dedication of the station on Depot Day, which .included the historic 611 steam engine, music, crafts, an antique auction and other special events; and WHEREAS, during his term as Mayor, the Town's experience substantial and significant industrial growth at Pulaski Furniture, Renfro, Diversified Apparel, Magnox and Jefferson Mills and other economic development projects, such as the opening of the Memorial Square Shopping Center and expansion of the Pulaski Plaza Shopping Center; and WHEREAS, the Town approved over $400,000 in UDAG loans to industry and downtown business for economic development projects that brought over 1,300 jobs to the Town; and WHEREAS, Amon the Town's accomplishments during his term as Mayor were the installation of the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications System, street, water and sewer improvements, neighborhood watch program, water plant expansion and the Town's membership in the Pepper's Ferry Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. WHEREAS, Gary C. Hancock maintained and enhanced public trust and confidence in the Town government, recognized the right of citizens to influence decisions that affect their well-being and ensured the continued existence of representative local government. NOW THEREFORE, Town Council of the Town of Pulaski hereby commends Gary C. Hancock for his leadership, vision and service to the Town's citizens and for his many contributions which improved the quality of life for all .Town citizens. • This resolution is adopted by recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, on this 5th day of July 1994 as follows: John Johnston Ave Bettye H.
