• Requesting a Corps of Engineers Feasibility Study
of Peak Creek
WHEREAS, the Town of Pulaski has experienced periodic flooding along Peak Creek and
its tributaries, including three 100-year floods since 1993; and
WHEREAS, this flooding has resulted in property loss and necessitated the evacuation of
residents; and
WHEREAS, in response to this situation and public comments, the Public Operations
Committee met with the Corps of Engineers and Virginia Department of Emergency
Services to discuss available programs to mitigate and eliminate flooding problems; and
WHEREAS, the committee recommended that a formal reconnaissance study be performed
by the Corps of Engineers at no cost to the Town; and
WHEREAS, the Town understands that a resolution by either the U.S. House of
Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure or the U.S. Senate
Committee on the Environment and Public Works is required to authorize the Corps to
develop a flood mitigation plan; and
WHEREAS, as a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program, the Town requests
that the Corps Study examine the feasibility of any structural or non-structural
improvements to reduce or eliminate the flooding problems. This study should include
• Lottier Street area, Kersey Bottom, Cool Springs and other areas identified by the Town;
and
BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, sitting in regular
session on, 1996, requests assistance for Peak Creek and its tributaries, located in the
Town of Pulaski, Pulaski County, Virginia. A copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to
U.S. Congressman Boucher and U.S. Senators Robb and Warner by the Clerk of Council.
This Resolution is effective immediately and is adopted this 21st day of May, 1996.
