Shavlan George Hillsman The meeting was opened. with a prayer by Tyr. Gordon Mi11s. The minutes of the regular monthly meeting of January 3, 1a56, were read and approved. Miss Luna Bones, who acted as speaker for the groin appearing in opposition to the issuar_ce of a building pe~t- mit at ~-he corner of First Street and South Washington Aenue~ gave a brief resume of the reasons for the group opposing the construction of a service station at that location. She'' stated it ~~ould be a nuisance, a safety hazard ar_d would,,; d e1~re ciate the value of the homes in that area. Miss Margaret Clifton., Principal of Jefferson School, 1~Irs. L. ~jA. Dunlap and Mr. George Bunn, Jr., also spoke in behalf of `` the group. F ~- hra~ ~ Council Minutes Cont~d Pulaski, Va., January 17, 1956 Mr. T. J. I~:cCarthy, ot~rner of the Maple Shade Inn and two houses in the vicinity of the proposed service station, stated he felt the block should be commercialized and did not object to the building of the station. The A4ayor advised. the group that the matter was on the agenda and_ would be discussed by the Council later in the meeting. Mr. ,~Tilliam H. Mowles of Roano'~e, Virginia, ,appeared before Council and stated he would like to obtain an option on a piece of land ire Oak~JJOOd Cemetery on which to erect a mausoleum. He stated. the mausoleum would contain `34 spaces ar~d would be approximately 6 5 feet by 40 feet. Mr. Mcwles zras advised th^t the Cemetery Committee ?~rould go into the matter further ~~ri_th him and for him to contact them. Mr. Fred. Jackson requested permission to connect a four inch water line to a two inch line to service ten. houses to be constructed by him in a subdivision on the West side of Peppers Ferry Road. Mr. Jackson was advised that it would be necessary for him to submit a plat of the proposed subdivision to t'ne Council in order that they minht have something to ~•rork from. Mr. Jackson next reauestedthat the Town construct a sewer line to serve a motel which he intends to build on Dublin Road just outside the corporate limits. Mayor Jackson referred the matt^r to the Sewer Committee for a report at the newt meeting of Council. Mr. Philip M. Sadler advised Council that he, Mr. Reamer, Mr. ?Iillsman and Mr. Shavlan represented the Pulaski County Chamber of Co~rmerce and that they were 1 appearing in behalf of the Nezrbern Road relocation project. He stated. that the County Board of Supervisors had appro- pr.iated funds for the improvement of the Hazel Hollow Road, but that it was felt if the To.~rn would commit itself to work with the Highway Department that the Hoard. of Supervisors would rescind its action. and appropriate the money to the _ ~ ~i.~ ~ ~ l` Council riinutes Cont ~d Pulaski, Va. , January 17, 19 E +~ relocation of rTewbern Road.. R. seconded ?~y T~~. E. Lester, it ~•~~as unanimously ~'' T~lartir, , RESOLVED, that the matter of a building permit for ~, r ~' r: ~.....s~..... ~~~ Council Minutes Cont~d Pulaski, Va., January 17, 1956 the construction of a gasoline service station on the T?orthwest corner of First Street and Sout'z Washington Avenue, be continued until the r_ext meeting of Council, pending cor~sultatior_ by the Council with the Town Attorney. The To~~rn Manager read a letter he had received from Marvin G. Graham, Cler'.~ of the Circuit Court, advising that the Board of Supervisors had again rejected the Subdivision Control Ordinance. On motion of J. R. Martin., seconded by I. R. Carper, with W. M. Farmer declining to vote, it t~ras unanimously RESOLVED, that the Circuit Court be asked to pass on the Subdivision Control Ordinance, pursuant to Section 15-788 of the 1950 Code of Virginia, as amended. Councilman Larson Ares^nted two proposals for bridge on East Main Street to be considered by the Council. On motion of M. E. Lester, seconded by I. R. Carper, it was unanimously RESOLVID, that the Town employ an attorney to de- term=ne the ownership of Peak Creek ir_asmuch as it is the feeling of the Council that the Town Attorney is placed in a difficult position ir.. the matter due to his connection t~rith one of the parties alleging ownership of the channel through town. There was a short discussion on the Bond. Issue to come up in June as to ~~rhat should be included in it. The Town. Manager was renuested to ask Wiley & ~udilson to submit figures or. the cost of Raines Hollow project. Coun.cil~nan Farmer brought to the attention of Council the fact that no recognition had been given to Judge John S. Draper's demise, and stated he felt a resolution should be drafted recognizing Judge Dre.per. On motion of ~T. M. Farmer, seconded by J. R. Councilman Carper advised Council of a number of par'~ing meters on Main and Jefferson he had ,noted out o~, order. The Town Manager stated that the meters were weaing ,. out and that the cold weather was partly the cause of tkm not operating properly. On motion of '~~d. P~.
