A Resolution Honoring John J. Hawley for His Service
to the Town of Pulaski, Virginia
WHEREAS, the Town Council, citizens and staff of the Town of Pulaski desire to recognize and express their
appreciation to those individuals who have served the town with distinction; and,
WHEREAS, John J. Hawley, a lifelong resident of Draper, Virginia, began his professional career with the
Town of Pulaski as an intern in the Engineering Department while enrolled as a Civil Engineering student at
Virginia Tech;
WHEREAS, Mr. Hawley, after receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech, was
employed by the Town of Pulaski as an Engineering Technician on June 10, 1974;
WHEREAS, in his nearly 40 years with the Town, he served in several capacities as Assistant Town Engineer
(1978), Town Engineer (1979); Interim Town Manager (1999-2000); and Town Manager (2002);
WHEREAS, in his capacity as Town Manager, he supervised and oversaw several significant
accomplishments by the Town including: the recruitment of James Hardie Building Products; the rebuilding of
the Pulaski Depot; the construction of the Raymond F. Ratcliffe Transportation Museum; the establishing of
Pulaski Area Transit; the construction of the Dora Trail; administration of the Dora Highway housing grant; and
directing the Town's initial response to and long range recovery from the Tornado of 2011;
WHEREAS, Mr. Hawley was known for his keen interest in and support of athletic competition as a fan of the
Pulaski Mariners, the Los Angeles Dodgers and especially as a faithful supporter of his beloved Virginia Tech
Hokies;
WHEREAS, in addition to his responsibilities to the Towri, he also demonstrated his belief and commitment to
friends, family and the community in his service to the United Methodist Church;
NOW, THEREFORE be it RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia sitting in regular
session this 5th day of November 2013, that the Town Council, does hereby extend the gratitude and
appreciation of the Council, the citizens and the staff of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia to John J. Hawley, for his
long service and dedication to the community as an employee of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia,
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted by the duly recorded vote of the Town Council
of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia this 5th day of November 2013 as follows:
