A Resolution Recognizing the Life and Service of Charles W. Stewart, Jr.
WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski desires to recognize those persons from the community
who have given of their time, talent and effort in rendering service to the town of Pulaski as a citizen and member
of Town Council; and,
WHEREAS, Charles W. Stewart, Jr. a native of Pulaski compiled a noteworthy record of personal and
professional achievements during his lifetime; and,
WHEREAS, after graduation from Pulaski High School in 1946 and National Business College in 1951, Mr.
Stewart served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until 1953 at the U.S. Far East Command
in Japan after which he enrolled at Virginia Tech under the G. I. Bill, earning a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in
1959; and,
WHEREAS, after graduation, Mr. Stewart spent most of his career at Sperry Marine in Charlottesville, Virginia
retiring from there in 1993 as the Engineering Section Head, in addition to working at Inland Motors from 1969 to
1974 and forming his own engineering consulting firm Great Southwest Inc. with a career focus on marine
engineering systems including periscopes, inertial navigation systems and collision avoidance systems; and,
WHEREAS, following his retirement Mr. Stewart returned to his beloved home town of Pulaski and entered public
life serving as a member of the Pulaski Town Council from July 1, 1996 to June 30, 2000 and as Mayor from July
1, 2000 to June 30, 2004 where he worked to introduce advanced technology, new recreational opportunities,
and responsible fiscal policies for the benefit of the Town and its citizens; and,
WHEREAS, despite his many professional achievements, Mr. Stewart left no doubt in the minds of those around
him that his beloved wife and family meant more to him than any honors he ever received;
WHEREAS, Charles W. Stewart, Jr. passed away on April 13, 2019;
NOW, THEREFORE be it RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia sitting in regular
session this 7th day of May 2019 that the Town Council does hereby commend the life and service of Charles W.
Stewart, Jr. to his community, his country and his loved ones.
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski extends is heartfelt condolences to the
family of Charles W. Stewart, Jr. upon his passing.
This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 7th day of May 2019 by the duly recorded
vote of the Town Council of Pulaski, Virginia as follows:
