HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-03Resolution 2020-03 A Resolution Honoring Umarea Bolden for His Actions in Reporting and Alerting Residents to a House Fire WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia desires to recognize citizens who of their own volition, stepped forward to render assistance in an emergency situation where the life and safety of their fellow citizens were at severest risk; and, WHEREAS, on the evening of December 22, 2019, D'marea Bolden while walking on his way home, saw smoke coming from his neighbor's residence at 215 Henry Avenue; and, WHEREAS, D'marea promptly ran to his home across the street and told his grandmother that their neighbor's home was on fire. He promptly called 911 to report the blaze and then ran across the street to the burning structure pounding and beating on the front door to alert his neighbor that the residence was on fire; and, WHEREAS, the neighbor who was sleeping at the time was wakened by D'marea's pounding on the door and finding the house full of smoke fled the structure in time to prevent serious injury or death; and WHEREAS, in talking with a Sheriff's Deputy, D'marea told the deputy that he used the knowledge that he learned from the Fire Prevention Program that was given at the Pulaski Public Schools (Critzer and PMS) during Fire Prevention Week each year; and, WHEREAS, in a conversation with the Fire Marshal, D'marea said he remembered the Fire Prevention Program's slogans such a "Stop, Drop and Roll" and its emphasis on calling 911 for any type of emergency and told the Fire Marshal, "See, I was listening when you were talking"; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia sitting in regular session this 21 st day of January 2020, that the Town Council does hereby commend D'marea Bolden for his courage and bravery in alerting First Responders and risking his own personal safety to alert the resident of a burning house, which resulted in the probable saving of a life. This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 21 sl day of January 2020 by the duly recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia as follows: Lane R.
