HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-33Resolution 2021-33 Resolution Supporting the Minor League Baseball Relief Act WHEREAS, the COVID-19 Pandemic resulted in minor league baseball (MiLB) clubs experiencing great financial loss with the average club losing 90% of its revenue from 2019 to 2020; and, WHEREAS, the pandemic resulted in two-thirds of clubs incurring additional debt while at the same time, facing the prospect of attendance for the 2021 season being half that of pre - pandemic levels and incurring increasing costs for COVID related safety precautions; and,; WHEREAS, minor league baseball has proven essential for local businesses given its economic and philanthropic community support and its offering of affordable family -friendly professional sports venues to communities, while also providing pre -pandemic employment of 3,300 full-time and 32,000 part-time and seasonal jobs nationwide; and WHEREAS, the Minor League Baseball Relief Act (S.2233/H.R.4150) has been introduced into the U.S. Congress to assist MiLB clubs with COVID related losses through the disbursement of $550 million in grants to eligible clubs equal to 45% of 2019 gross revenues to be applied to payroll, regular business expenses, worker protection expenditures and contractor payments; and, WHEREAS, minor league baseball's importance in the Town of Pulaski as a source of economic vitality and community life cannot be understated, retention of this asset is deemed vital to the redevelopment efforts of the Town and the economic and community life of its citizens; i NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia, sitting in regular session,this 6th day of July 2021, that the Town Council supports passage, of the Minor League Baseball Rescue Act and urges the U.S. Congress to speedily approve this measure as soon as possible. This resolution is effective upon adoption and is hereby adopted this 6th day of July 2021 b the duly recorded vote of the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia as follows: Lane R.
