Resolution Honoring Marine Corporal Lewis Kenneth Bausell
Medal of Honor Recipient
WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia desires to recognize and honor Marine
Corporal Lewis Kenneth Bausell who had rendered a career of service to our Country and,
WHEREAS, Marine Corporal Lewis Kenneth Bausell was born in Pulaski on April 17, 1924, he enlisted in
the Marine Corp at 17 following the bombing at Pearl Harbor, he served with the 5th Marine Regiment of
the 151 Marine Division during the Guadalcanal Campaign, Battle of the Cape Gloucester, and the Battle
of Peleliu
WHEREAS, in his role as Marine Corporal during the battle of Peleliu Marine Corporal Lewis Kenneth
Bausell heroically threw himself on a grenade to save the lives of his fellow Marines. He died from his
wounds on September 18, 1944 and was buried at sea.
WHEREAS, Marine Corporal Lewis Kenneth Bausell was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by
President Franklin Roosevelt on June 11, 1945, other honors bestowed upon Corporal Bausell were the
Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic Campaign Medal, four Bronze Stars, and the World War I)
Victory Medal
WHEREAS, The USS Bausell a destroyer warship was named in his honor and christened on November 19,
1945 during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Town Council of the Town of Pulaski, Virginia sitting in regular
session this 17th day of May 2022, that the Town Council extends its sincerest thanks and appreciation to
the family of Marine Corporal Lewis Kenneth Bausell for his dedicated life of service to our Country.
